Burtonsville Panthers Club President, Darryl Hill  Darryl Hill

Paint Branch head coach Mike Nesmith

Paint Branch head coach Mike Nesmith

Darryl:  What should we expect from PB Football this year?
Coach Knee:  Hopefully a lot of wins! One thing for sure is that our fans will witness a very aggressive approach to football that is somewhat uncommon. We will constantly be in attack mode offensively and defensively. We will go for it on 4th down far more than our opponents. We will onside kick often in hopes of getting the ball back! Offensively we will play fast, with tempo, with an explosive passing game and an diverse running game. Defensively, we will play to the strengths of our defense… play fast and put as much pressure on offenses to execute as possible.

Darryl:  Biggest surprises coming out of preseason?
Coach Knee:  No real surprises came out of this preseason of note.

Darryl:  Difference in this years team compared to past years?
Coach Knee:  It’s hard to say what the difference between this year’s team and previous teams is since we have yet to play any meaningful games. This team is similar to the ’09, ’11, ’13 teams in which they seem to have state championship potential during the pre/offseason. It remains to be seen whether they can finally accomplish what the others could not… Win the 4A State Championship!

Darryl:  Top returners on offense and defense?
Coach Knee:  J.D Guerrero headlines the top returners on offense as he’s expected to be one of the top wide receivers in MoCo as a junior. Garrin Adolphe & Sundjata Suma return to anchor the offensive line on an offense that has a lot of new faces. Defensively, linebackers Jordan Hill & Gibbs Tinne return to headline what has the makings to be an excellent defense. The secondary is anchored by returning starter Cedric Content and three-year starter Jovaun Wheeler.

Darryl:   Who are and what do you expect from your captains?
Coach Knee:  The official voting for the captains won’t be finalized until this evening, but we expect the captains to epitomize the PANTHER STANDARD… demonstrating excellence on and off of the field.

Darryl:   New players that you are looking to contribute this year?
Coach Knee:  There are several new players that we expect to contribute significantly this year starting with linebacker Michael Collins. His addition to an already talented linebacking core provides our defense with as fine a LB Group as any high school in the area. Mike is an explosive defender who can have a major impact on our defense. Jonathan “Boogie” Somuah is another defender new to our defense, playing defensive end for us this season. “Boogie” is a versatile defender who could line up any of the front seven spots on the defense. And Ivan Nnadi, new to most outside the program, will be a dynamic playmaker on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and as a safety.

Darryl:   What is unique and special about PB Football?
Coach Knee:  There are many things that make PB Football special, but to me, what I’m most proud of, is the family atmosphere that we’ve created and cultivated. Many athletic teams preach togetherness and “family”, but they don’t take it to the extent we do. Our family is together year ’round, working, training, striving for one common goal… and it doesn’t stop once their playing days are over. I care deeply for my players and that extends for years… long after they have finished playing football for me. We have a staff full of like-minded men who care about our boys the way I do… who all push them to be great players on the field and great men off of it.

Darryl:   What makes coaching at PB special?
Coach Knee:   The same thing that makes the program special… these men care about our young men… our future… our youth. Much of the staff takes precious time away from their own young families to help coach and mentor our boys at PB. We have coaches who try to focus on what the young man CAN DO and not what he CANNOT. Our coaches put in countless hours over the course of the season… meeting EVERY SINGLE DAY w/o a day off from mid-August until the end of the season.
