Coach Smith wrestled at High Point High School from 1977-1979.  High Point won the State Championship when Coach Smith was a sophomore.  Coach Smith started his 25 year coaching career at High Point where he coached from 1989-90.  He then served as an assistant coach for one year and as head coach for two years (from 1990-93) at Albert Einstein High School.

Coach Smith likes coaching because it allows him to build relationships with athletes and watch young men grow up mentally, physically, and spiritually.  As for how long he plans to continue coaching, he takes it one year at a time, hopefully until his boys graduate: Nolan in 2017 and Austin in 2019.

Favorite Coaching Memory: “I have been blessed with a lot.  I could pick a top ten, I could pick our State Championship season in 2001.  I am hoping that I have many more to come.”

Danny 6Coach Danny Lethbridge

Coach Danny Lethbridge, a graduate of Paint Branch, joined the wrestling staff last year.  Coach Lethbridge wrestled while at Paint Branch and also wrestled at Messiah College.  During the day he works at Churchill High School as a Para-educator.

Coach Lethbridge enjoys getting to know the high school kids on a more personal level.  He also enjoys seeing the kids he works with get better and do moves he has shown them.  If you have been to any of the matches, you have seen him demonstrating the moves in front of the bench while the wrestlers are on the mat!  As this is his second year coaching, his favorite coaching memory is yet to happen, but we are sure he will have many during his tenure with us here at PBHS!!!

Coach Zac Mills’ significant other is wife Sara, newlyweds who were married last May 12th.  He attended Wallkill High School in New York, SUNY Cortland, American University, UMDC (BA Physics, MA Education) and Johns Hopkins (Masters, Civil Engineering).  Coach Mills’ day job is Physics teacher at PBHS.

Coach Mills wrestled in high school and at SUNY Cortland.  He has been coaching for four years, the last two at Paint Branch.  His other coaching job was at Oakland Mills High School.  Coach Mills coaches because he feels the kids should have the same opportunities that he had.

AdamAdam James, Assistant Coach

Coach Adam James’ family includes his wife Adenike James and his son Adam Michael James.  He is a 2001 graduate of Paint Branch and a graduate of the University of Maryland in College Park.  Adam wrestled for PB from 1997-2001 and for UMD from 2001-2006.  He has been coaching off and on since 2001 and has been at PB “forever.”  The thing Adam likes best about coaching is helping young men/women grow and learn and forming relationships with coaches and athletes.  Adam does not yet have a favorite coaching memory, but undoubtedly will as he plans to coach as long as his wife will let him.

Carl 4Carl Chirichella, Assistant Coach

Coach Carl’s family includes wife Carissa and sons, Lucas and Leo.  Coach Carl attended Paint Branch and the University of Maryland, College Park.  His day job is as an Electrical Engineer/Project Manager.

Coach Carl wrestled for four years while at Paint Branch.  This is his tenth season coaching at his alma mater.  Prior to coaching at PB, he did some junior league coaching for Burtonsville while he was in college.  Coach Carl coaches because: “I hope I bring a positive input and influence to young men’s lives that leaves an impression long past when wrestling ends.  And, of course, wrestling is a character building sport and I truly enjoy witnessing the change it brings to them.”  He “has no idea” how long he plans to continue coaching.

Coach Carl’s favorite memory: “There are so many good memories, but having a chance to coach my brother Vincent at states.  Although he was injured it was a great experience and I will always remember it.  Also, Counties last year walking out with a couple of County champs was pretty exciting.

Bill 4Bill Matthews, Assistant Wrestling Coach

Coach Bill Matthews’ family includes his wife Susan and sons Chris and Ryan.  He attended Peters Township High School in McMurray, PA and Clarion University.  Coach Matthews retired from teaching after 31 years, 24 of which were spent at Paint Branch, in 2002.

Coach Matthews coaches to see how successful the wrestlers can be as they grow up in the sport and become young men of character.  He plans to coach as long as he still enjoys it!  His favorite coaching memories are coaching two three-time State Champions as an assistant and head coach and the undefeated 2001 State Champion Paint Branch Team that he coached with Coach Rick Smith.
